Osama bin Laden's death

This is mostly a discussion.

Something that surprises me is how Americans view themselves as civilized people, yet when someone who attacked our nation has been killed by our soldiers, we act like savages and dance and celebrate. Civilization was just thrown out the window. We are dancing around like a tribe celebrating the massacre of a rival village. I know he attacked us, destroying billions of dollars in property and thousands of lives, but we have killed 10 times as many Middle-Easterners, mostly civilians. They are not responsible. It is only a hand-full of crazy fanatics with bombs and the will to kill themselves in their God's name that have caused half the world such misery.

How do you feel about how we have handled ourselves in the past 10 years since 9/11? Have we appropriately responded to the attacks with precision, or have we just gone over there to slay those who might have had something to do with the attacks.

  1. I agree completely with you in the stating of us acting like savages when Bin Laden was killed. Don't the adults always preach to forgive and forget, while they are out hunting this one guy for nine and a half years? And we're also told not to take revenge on our enemies because it always ends bad.

  3. I do not think that we have a right to either kill him or be celebrating his death like savages as you stated. We where as bad as he was if not worse. In the religion of Osama bin Laden stated that there would be outer influences trying to convert you and you shouldn't trust them. To them we are the outer influences, because we use the power we have to place rulers over them that are cruel tyrannical and eating out of our hands so that we can get whatever resources we want. So maybe we where just as bad as he was which then gives us really no right to kill him. Also his name has barely been heard in the past couple of years, not since 9/11 anyway, so maybe he was just dying out like terrorism in Ireland did. I agree with Matt, we should have followed the example taught to us and forgave, because we are equal to him and if this is about justice, it is not ours to deliver.

  4. I agree completely with Claire. Very nice job describing the issue and causes. I only wish we weren't stupid Americans as the world sees and as we really are, but rather those who knew more about what they were talking about, what was happening, and what was doing.

  5. In some ways I completely agree with you because it does seem pretty for people to be celebrating over someones death. He did kill thousands of people though and I know you stated in your post that we have probably killed 10 times more people, but we are at war with them. Not that that makes it right but I feel like it changes things a little bit.
